What is the Digital League Table?

The Real Towns Digital League Table is a rolling snapshot of how UK places are implementing digital technologies to boost footfall, increase business engagement, attract more tourists, and promote local interests and activities.

It’s open to shopping districts, villages, towns and cities to enter and it’s free.

Why did we create the Digital League Table?

The Real Towns Digital League Table is the first truly national audit of the state of digital technology in UK towns. Until now, no attempt has been made to benchmark or measure how places are responding to the challenges of the digital age.

We wanted to create a quick, simple survey any town could complete at no cost.

Over time, we will get a picture of what technologies and tools are being introduced by which towns and cities.

This is just the beginning of the process. We want all participants to see this as the first step towards adopting a digital lifestyle that makes technology and communication a top priority which is planned and funded every step of the way.

How does it work?

Getting your place on the Real Towns Digital League Table is easy and free.

  1. Complete the Digital Health Check survey.
  2. We’ll collate the information, provide you with a provisional score and post it on the Digital League Table. Please note this score is unverified. All unverified scores are marked with an * on the League Table.

Verify your score by completing our comprehensive survey, which examines your town’s vision, goals and accomplishments in much more detail. To cover our costs for assessing your entry, a charge of £199 applies.

Once we have processed your answers, we’ll verify your score on the League Table, entitling you to more points, a Real Towns certificate for taking part, as well as a badge to display on your website and social media channels. We hope this encourages more towns to participate and help us build a thorough database of Digital Placemaking plans and achievements in the UK.

Send us a message from this page to request the detailed survey. We’ll invoice you and email the questions to you upon receiving your payment.

Why should you participate?

The digital revolution is having an impact on shops, businesses and residents everywhere. Some places have adapted better than others.

The initial Digital Health Check survey sets a baseline for what technology and strategies villages, towns and cities in the UK are using to respond to the challenge.

The more places that participate, the more accurate the picture will be that emerges from the process. For example, we have already identified that more than 60% of places don’t have a digital strategy and 80% don’t have public access wifi.

Help us build a complete picture of what’s happening now and work towards what will bring places success in the future. Our second survey will help us establish best practice guidelines as we identify the tools, technologies and strategies which are delivering the best outcomes.

Real Towns is a commercial enterprise and we make a living by introducing many of the products and services that will shape the future of the places where we live, work and play. But we won’t penalise places that have opted for products from other digital suppliers, so long as they meet our exacting standards. On the contrary, we’ll reward all places that invest in their digital future by whatever means by awarding them more points so they can climb the Digital League Table.

Can I increase my score?

Yes.

The quickest way to climb the table is to verify your score by requesting our second, more comprehensive survey.

To cover our costs for assessing your entry, a charge of £199 applies.
